Monash NCI Scheme
Monash eResearch – in an ongoing partnership with the Faculties of Science, Engineering, and IT – continues to provide high-performance computing capacity through the National Computing Infrastructure - NCI. Our quarterly allocation gives Monash researchers and HDR students access to the NCI Gadi HPC cluster and project data storage through a competitive, lightweight application process.
Key Scheme Details:
- HDR Students: Encouraged to apply. Discuss the application with your Chief Investigator (CI) or supervisor first, and include their name in your submission.
- Request Limits: Minimum Request: 1 kSU | Maximum Request: 600 kSU
- Application Details: Please review the NCI SU model to evaluate the SU budget required.
Eligibility & Submission Rules
- Who can apply: HDR students and Monash researchers based at Australian campuses.
- Email requirement: Applications must use an official Monash email address.
- Data restrictions: Projects involving sensitive data are not eligible.
- Submission process: All applications must be endorsed by the Monash eResearch HPC Advisory Committee. Do not submit requests directly to the NCI Help Desk; direct requests will be rejected and may affect future eligibility.
- Applying for project extensions: Applicants seeking an extension to their NCI project must also complete the project report form; otherwise, their applications won’t be considered.

Terms and Conditions
- Unused allocation will expire at the end of the term and cannot be rolled over automatically to the next term.
- For the approved grants greater than 300 kSU, 50% will be initially provided.
- Usage is monitored and might be reduced mid-term if it is below 75%.
- Excessive unused allocation by the end of the term will likely reduce the chances for an extension. eResearch recommends that researchers plan accordingly for compute and data requirements.
- Excessive unused allocation by mid-term may be removed and returned to the resource pool for reallocation unless a valid assurance can be made that the allocation will be fully utilised by the end of the term.
- More resources can be requested if the provisioned allocation has reached 80% and is insufficient. Please contact Monash eResearch at hpc-partners@monash.edu.
- NCI resource requests must be submitted and reviewed through the official eResearch process before reaching NCI. Unsanctioned direct requests cannot be approved and may jeopardise your eligibility for future allocation rounds.
- Applications submitted past cutoff deadlines will not be considered.
- You must acknowledge the Monash NCI Allocation Scheme in all relevant theses, conference papers, and peer-reviewed publications resulting from the use of the Monash NCI Scheme.
